Mediums of photographs, where images attach themselves on, have changed over a short period of time. This indicates that photography has always carried with itself a potential of diverse materiality as well as sculptural properties since its origin. Photographic images have always been seeking a body to dwell in.

 

Tawada’s works contain such mystical spirituality from the early period of photography. Her approach to photography can be seen as an endeavor to redeem the magical materiality the photograph carries. Here, one must focus on Tawada’s manual attempt to awaken the reality from the photograph and to discover the immanent aura that resonates within the photograph.

 "My creation is on the borderline of photograph, painting and sculpture.

I intend to take people into sensory experiences by my making emotional traces.

 In this process, I refer to the arts of sympathetic magic and methods of therapeutic techniques. What I pursue is not only their magical or therapeutic effects, but also effective way to make photographs to speak again, after being consumed in modern life.

 Although it became difficult for people to look carefully into photographs in this age of information overload, people still seem to seek for a smell of physical traces over the smooth surface of digital images. The reason why I deal with photographs is because it intimately connects with people’s emotion and unconsciousness while regarded as objective media in public."
